2-Antique 19th Century French NeoClassical Cast Iron Pedestals. Height=34"in.
Decorate an entry or a living room with this elegant pair of antique display pedestals. Crafted in France circa 1850, and made of cast iron, both stands have a round base over a carved stem decorated with acanthus leaf motifs, with a circular iron top. Both tall columns are attributed to French sculptor J.J. Ducel. They are in excellent condition with a beautiful and rich patinated white finish. Each piece weight 120 pounds.
Jean Jacques Ducel (1801-1877) was a Marseille born French sculptor, founder and iron master. He created the Ducel foundry in 1829 with Paulin Viry, purchasing the Pocé-sur-Cisse estate iron foundry and it became one of the largest art foundries in France until Ducel's death. The factory was sold in 1878 to the Fonderie de la Haute-Marne. However, prior to the firm's sale, critics at the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle proclaimed that "Ducel is the great manufacturer of works in cast-iron, to whom Paris is so largely indebted for the grace and elegance that supply so many of the adornments of its streets". Ducel, Val d'Osne and other associated foundries produced both bronze and cast-iron statuary.
