On offer here is this pair fantastic antique carved wood and gilt architectural columns from Newcastle Cathedral.
195cm tall x 18cm across base.
Made sometime between 1850 and 1880 these two carved wooden columns are large architectural Columns and were once in the nave of Newcastle Cathedral. They do look like a pair of very large candlesticks and the fact they have got candlewax on the bottom which makes me wonder if they were used as alter candles.
They are made of carved OAK and then gilded with gold leaf. Like with all things from churches from this period they are very good quality and very decorative.
They stand over 1.95m tall and are octagonal. Newcastle Cathedral is currently undergoing restoration work inside and these were surplus to requirements and I was lucky enough to be able to buy them.
There are two tall columns with octagonal cup shaped tops with octagonal columns and bases . They have metal brackets on which is where they were joined together and possibly had tapestries hanging between them.
The condition is excellent they have spent their lives being looked after in a museum atmosphere conducive to maintaining fantastic A1 condition. There are some small signs of age but nothing I can really photograph of point out, please check photographs carefully.
Delivery UK only will be made by specialist antique furniture courier at a price of £80 all the customer is welcome to collect from Cambridge.
